Unbabies (Part VIII, chapter 19)

  1. One in four babies is born disabled, because of too much chemicals and radiation in the air.
  2. There are no longer machines which could tell, if the baby is handicapped.
  3. The Handmaids have to carry them to term.
  4. Abortions are no longer allowed in Gilead.
  5. Disabled babies are declared "Unbabies" and are quickly taken away after birth.
  6. Handmaids are told by the aunts, that they take a risk, but that in reward the glory will be great, if they give birth to a healthy child.
  7. This is a manipulating trick, because the Handmaids are not to keep their babies anywhere

Offred's Mother (Part 8 Chapter 20)

  1. Offred sees her in an "Unwoman Documentary" shown at the Red Center.
  2. She took part in protests and demonstrations before the time of Gilead.
  3. She symbolizes the Feminists' movement against Gilead.
  4. She plays an important role in Offred's memories and thoughts.
  5. Offred admired her mother, even though she expected much of her.
  6. She liked to be more rebellious than Offred and risked to be wounded at the portest marches.
  7. She got along well with Offred's friend Moira.

The relationship between the Commander and Offred (part 9 chapters 24/ part 10 chapter 25)

  1. It is an illegal relationship
  2. There must be something he wants from her.
  3. The commander does a lot of effort to keep this relationship (with presents like the VOGUE)
  4. Offred sees a risk in the relationship - either it is a way to get out or it is her downfall
  5. His needs seem a bit ridiculous to Offred
  6. Offred does not love the Commander, but he is of interest to her, e.g. to get hand lotion
  7. In the ceremony he is no longer a thing for her, it becomes more personal

Moira`s escape (part 8 chapter 22)

  1. Janine has to tell Aunt Lydia about Moira`s escape
  2. Moira called Aunt Elizabeth into the washroom, the toilets were overflowing
  3. Moira has fixed the toilets and at the right moment, she starts to menace Aunt Elizabeth
  4. Moira has menchanical ability
  5. Aunt Elizabeth couldn`t see see what was poking into her back
  6. She has to take off her clothes, so that Moira could put them on for her escape, she gets handcuffed by Moira
  7. No one noticed Moira, because her posture was the same as the aunts one and she marched straight out of the door

Infertility (part 4, chapter 11)

  1. Officially, men in Gilead are not infertile; the sterility of men in Gilead is a topic that is out of bounds
  2. If a women fails to conceive, it is said that she is "barren", no one considers that the men could be sterile
  3. This denial is another way of glorifying men in Gilead
  4. If a woman fails to bear children, she is sent to the colonies
  5. The Commander's Wives are very often infertile
  6. The handmaid's only exist to bear children for their commanders because of the fact of their infertile wives
  7. fertility is a great topic in Gilead; Handmaids even great one another with: "blessed be the fruit"

Aunts (part 8, chapter 19)

  1. The Aunts try to convince the Handmaids by telling them of the glory they will get if they bear children for Gilead.
  2. Women who did not want to have children in the former time, were lazy sluts in the opinion of the Aunts.
  3. The Aunts want the Handmaids to be proud of their function.
  4. Aunt Lydia talks about "satisfied good cheer" though the atmosphere , for example in chapter 1, is described totally different.
  5. Doctors are no longer allowed to practise in the Red Centre, because it is "shamefull".
  6. Also anaesthetics are not used anymore, this new rule is based on a verse in Genesis.
  7. In my opinion the "education" in the Red Centre is a kind of brain-washing, because the Handmaids are forced to change their values and almost every kind of freedom is forbidden in the Republic of Gilead.

Meetings between Offred and the Commander (part 8, chapter 23)

  1. The meetings take place when Serena Joy is not at home.
  2. Beeing alone with the Commander is officialy forbidden.
  3. Offred does not dare to refuse the Commander.
  4. In the room of the Commander a lot of forbidden things (magizines,books etc.) can be found.
  5. When the Commander is alone in the evenings he likes to see his Handmaid.
  6. The Commander often feels loney therefore he loves the presence of Offred.
  7. The Commander enjoys making litle gifts to Offred.

Anna-Lena

The Birth (part 8, ch. 20 & 21)

  1. The Commander is absent from the birth.
  2. During the birth, the Handmaids are singing to calm down Ofwarren.
  3. This "ceremony" is very emotional for all involved people.
  4. When it is time for the delivery,the Handmaid sits on the Birthing Stool and the lights are dimmed.
  5. Getting a girl is not as good as getting a boy, but the main thing is that is is healthy.
  6. The Wife gets the baby after is is washed and the other Wives come in to vongratulate on the baby.
  7. Offwaren is allowed to nurse the baby because of the importance of the mother´s milk.
