Summary of Act III
Act III begins with a dialogue between Macbeth , King of Scotland, and Banquo, who has his doubts about how Macbeth reached his new position.
Macbeth invites Banquo to a banquet at the palace, but Banquo wants to take a ride with his son Fleance first and then return for the banquet in the evening.
After he has gone, Macbeth meets with two murderers, who he commands to assassinate Banquo and Fleance out in the hills.
In a dialogue with his wife Lady Macbeth, the king admits that fear and insecurity still haunt him, but at the same time he makes hints towards more dark deeds that will be performed. She tries to comfort him and tells him to brood no more.
The murderers try to kill Banquo and Fleance in the darkness, but Fleance manages to escape. When they come back to report the partly successful murder, Macbeth is pleased, yet disturbed by the thought of Fleance’s escape.
At the banquet with his Lords, Macbeth is visited by Banquo, appearing several times as a ghost, visible only for Macbeth. He breaks out in rude offences and curses whenever the ghost enters, greatly worrying the Lords, who cannot see Banquo. After some time, Lady Macbeth sends them away, reassuring them that everything is alright and telling Macbeth he made a real fool out of himself. He swears to meet the Weird Sisters again to challenge them for the whole truth about his life.
Meanwhile the three witches and Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft, agree to use their magic to totally ruin the over-confident Macbeth on their next encounter.
The act ends with a scene at Lennox’s castle, where he very guarded and ironically talks about Duncan’s murder and Macbeth’s guilt, making subtle hints towards Macbeth’s intentions to murder Malcolm, Donaldbain and Fleance.
Malcolm has been warmly welcomed in England and Macduff now plans to overthrow Macbeth with the help of King Edward’s army.

Summary of Act V
Act V begins in the king’s palace at Dunisane where a doctor and a gentlewoman discuss Lady Macbeth’s strange habit of sleepwalking, when she herself walks in murmuring about the murders of Duncan, Lady Macduff and Banquo, silently watched by the doctor and the gentlewoman. After the doctor has seen Lady Macbeth sleepwalking he is convinced that she needs a priest rather than medical help.
Malcolm, Macduff, other Scottish thanes and the English army, joined by some young Scottish men, meet in Birnam Wood to march towards Dunisane Castle. Malcolm orders to use branches to camouflage their approach to Dunisane. He knows that Macbeth is making his military preparations in a mad rage.\\
Macbeth recalls the predictions of the spirits to his mind and since no naturally born man can defeat him, he gets all crazy about them. When his servant confirms that an army of ten thousand men is approaching the castle he realizes that the coming battle will either strengthen him or dethrone him. The doctor reports about Lady Macbeth’s current state of health and confesses that he will not be able to heal her mental disease.
Lady Macbeth is so much distracted by her paranoia and hallucinations that she commits suicide only a little while later.
Macbeth seems numb in response to the news of his wife’s death and decides to fight till “the flesh is hacked from his bones” and he commands that all Scottish men who cause rumours and spread fear shall be hanged.\\
Outside the castle Malcolm instructs the soldiers to throw down their branches and show their real faces. On the battlefield Macbeth fights vigorously, always keeping in mind that no man born of a woman can harm him. He murders Lord Siward’s son and disappears.\\
Macduff enters the castle and challenges Macbeth longing to cut him down personally. He tells Macbeth that he was delivered by a Ceasarean section and takes revenge for his wife and children by slaying Macbeth. Afterwards he proclaims Malcolm King of Scotland.\\
Malcolm declares that all the thanes will be made earls and invites all of them to see him crowned at Scone.
