Sebastian:History During the second millenium BC the uninhabited islands were colonised by Micronesia. In 1526 Spanish ships commanded by Alonso de Salazar reached the islands. Spain didn't claim them though. Two and a half centuries later, in 1788, British ships under Captain William Marshall passed the islands. The islands later got their name by him. In the beginning of the 19th century, Otto von Kotzebue mapped the islands for Russia. In 1885 a German trading corporation settled down on Marshall Islands. One year later the German Empery officially took the islands as colonies. In 1909 Marshall Islands became part of German New Guinea. In 1914, during World War I, Japan conquered the islands for strategic reasons. Military bases were built on some of the islands. At 31st January 1944 the USA assigned Kawajalein Atoll. During the next few weeks, 30 more islands were captured. After the end of World War II, the USA used the islands of Bikini and Eniwetok for atomic tests. The islands have been effectively contaminated so natives had to be resettled. In 1979 the islands officially became independent, even if the USA as a protector went on ruling the islands. In 1990 the US protectorate ended. Marshall Islands became a republic.

Bianca&Dennis:Economy

Today the main point, how the inhabitants earn their money is the agriculture. The production is concentrated on small farms all over the island. Most of the farms are family businesses. There, they for example grow coconuts, tomatoes, melons, breatfruit and pandanus. The inhabitants also make some money with the export of their fruits in other countries. All Marshallese have land rights as part of a clan so they are responsible for all daily work. Their land is passed down generation to generation through the mother. Most of the people on the island live in houses out of straw. Often the houses are selfmade. The tourist industry is another point of economy, but it is only 10% of the total how the people earn their money.

Lauritz&Vanessa:Environment&General facts

  • The country consists of twenty-nine atolls and five isolated islands. The most important atolls and islands form two groups: the Ratak Chain(east) and the Ralik(west) Chain (meaning "sunrise" and "sunset" chains).
  • Two-thirds of the nation's population lives on Majuro(which is also the capital) and Ebeye.
  • 10 atolls are unhabitant, for example the Bikini Atoll because of the atomic bomb tests.
  • The outer islands are less populated due to lack of unemployment and their ecnomic development. Besides they live very traditional.
  • offical languages Marshallese, English
  • explored by Spain
  • more than 1150 islands
  • Climate: wet season from May to November; hot and humid; islands border typhoon belt

Lauritz text:

The Marshall-islands

The Marshall-Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean north-east from Australia and were explored by Spain in 1526. They consist of 29 different atolls and five isolated islands. There are two island-chains called Ratak Chain in the east and Ralik Chain in the west. Majuro on the island Majuro is the capital and the most people live there and in Ebeye. Ten atolls are unhabitant ,for example Bikini Atoll because there were a lot of atomic bombs tested by the USA and it would be dangerous to live there in the next ten years. The outer islands are less populated so the most people live in the center of the the Marshall-Islands.

The official languages are Marshallese and English and there live about 60 million people on 181 square kilometres big island-atolls. It is an hot and humid climate and the wet season goes from May to November. Of course it is a beautiful dream or holyday-place with palms ,bright blue water and milelong white beaches.
