Environment
Hawaii has an area of 4,028 square miles (10,432 km²). The Island of Hawaii is a US island. It is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is the largest Hawaiian Island.
In the year 2003 Hawaii had a population of 158,400 inhabitants.
The highest point of the island is the Mauna Kea.
Hawaii is the world’s longest island chain which 1,523 miles. It is located off the southwestern shore of Molokai west of Lanai.
A chain of 132 islands makes up the state we call Hawaii, but we only think of the eight main islands, each of which is the top of an under water volcanic mountain. The remaining 124 islands together only contain about three square miles and are not fit for human habitation. All of the main islands, with the exception of Kahoolawe, are inhabited.
Hawaii is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean about 2,400 miles southwest of the United States.
Hawaii has a tropical vegetation, beautiful beaches and volcanic mountains. The Kilauea Volcano is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world.
The biggest cities are Honululu ( 377.260 thousand inhabitants), Hilo (40.759 inhabitants), Kailua, Kaneohe, Waipathu, Pearl City, Waimalu, Millilani Town, Kathului and Kihei.

Environmental Problems
One environmental problem on Hawai'i is the Great Crack. It is a crack which is 13km long, 18m wide and 18m deep and developed because of volcanic eruptions. The problem is that a major chunk of the island can break away, fall into the ocean and create a huge tsunami and earthquake. It already happened in the past. A section of Hilina Slump broke away into the ocean. It resulted in a 10m high tsunami, which cost 2 lives.
Hawai'i is the most highly militarized island in the world. Every branch of the United States Armed Forces is stationed in Hawai'i. They use the island for live-fire artillery training. The problem is that they use radioactively depleted uranium munitions. Although the radioactivity on the island through the ammunitions was tested and discussed in parliament in 2008, which does not really want to deal with it, the training continues. And more and more plants and animals are endangered just because of the live-fire atillery traning.
At present there are cases of children born with diabetes and asthma whose parents lived or still live in communities downwind from live-fire training ranges.
